Kids and Teens Programmes

The adults have another place to do sport on South Lantau; now it’s the kids’ turn. Officially opening in October 2023, the adult foundations programme has proven quite the success, fostering a supportive community where the focus is on getting better together. Buffalo Jiu-Jitsu is now expanding this culture to our youth.

With its rapid spread around the globe in recent years, this is a very exciting time for the sport, especially for kids entering it. In Hong Kong, more opportunities to train and compete are available to kids every year. Your child will learn the essential movements, skills, and strategies that form the backbone of this thrilling sport/martial art.

Why Jiu-Jitsu?

The mainstream team sports available locally offer a lot to kids, but Jiu-Jitsu occupies a different place. It contains aspects of fighting (wrestling/grappling), but without any strikes in its sporting form. It is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, yet practitioners always feel they need to improve. It is largely an individual sport, but we act as a team every training session to develop our skills via the challenges we give each other on the mats.

Jiu-Jitsu offers a physical and mental challenge which is difficult in a way many sports are not. There are personal and primal aspects to being taken down, pinned (often for a long time) and submitted by others. All such tough situations are to be seen not as daunting challenges to be overcome through sheer strength and will, but as physical puzzles to solve via leverage, movement and the gaining of advantageous angles. In this way, a smaller, weaker person may overcome great odds: the path to true self-confidence begins here.

As such, Jiu-Jitsu has proven itself in self-defence, law enforcement and the military as a highly effective way to provide a measured response to violence due to its focus on immobilisation of an opponent. Kids can learn how to stop violence without necessarily causing great injury to an attacker.

At Buffalo Jiu-Jitsu, we understand that every child has his/her unique personality, physicality and growth journey. The majority of time in our sessions will be spent live training with a partner, so any child can feel the fun of play when grappling, but also develop creativity in movement, style and self-expression.

8-12yo: Tue & Fri 5:20pm - 6:20pm

13-17yo*: Fri 6:30pm - 8:00pm (Tue soon!)

We would love to hear from parents and teens, so contact us today to register your interest or any queries you may have.

*Teens aged 18-19 may also join these sessions, but must pay the adult monthly rate.

Training Sessions

At our training sessions, students will first be introduced to the day’s session with warm-ups: the ‘movements behind the moves’ they will be doing later in the session.
They will then learn how to stretch for athlete self-care. Next will be the fun stuff: most of the session will involve partner work: skill, tenacity, safety, control and social skills are developed via live training with friends.

Towards the end, we will put the sessions’ skills together in one final package of live ‘rolling’ (sparring without striking). The final few minutes has kids going over what they have done that session before we show respect and leave the mats.

We aim for our kids to be tired, happy and a little more grown-up at the end of each session. Come and try!
